Polaris, the project name for the next The Witcher title, has just hit an all-important milestone in its development process.
Director Sebastian Kalemba has taken to social media in order to reveal that the game — commonly referred to as The Witcher 4 — is now in "full-scale production".
Typically, this means that the bones of a project have been assembled; the foundations are in place and all of the studio's teams can get cracking on actually building the game out. Basically, this is where everything starts coming together.
Polaris was originally announced in March 2022, before entering pre-production in May 2022. Kalemba himself was revealed as director in November of that same year.
So, in essence, The Witcher 4 — or whatever it ends up being called — has been in development for over three years. The majority of developers at CD Projekt Red have been working on it ever since support for Cyberpunk 2077 wrapped up in late 2023.
When can we expect Polaris to release, then? Well, again, full production is a big deal, but there's no way to place a definitive timeline on this part of the cycle, and it really all depends on the scope of the project as a whole.
But at the very least, we can see CD Projekt Red teasing one or two things in the coming months, now that the basics are locked in.
What are your hopes and dreams for The Witcher 4? Feel free to bet on a release year in the comments section below.

Looking forward to it, 2028 can't come soon enough!!
The only certain thing is that I will play this game!!
The witcher 3 is the greatest game of all time in my humble opinion but I'm hoping this can even better that. Either way I genuinely can't wait for this!
This is a nice reminder for me to play The Witcher 3. It’s been in my backlog for a couple of years now
This might be the best RPG of all time if they give it time in the oven. Many quests interlocking with each other and a dynamic world with actually meaningful choices and interesting in-depth characters and narratives going on. Can't wait!
Witcher 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. Cyberpunk 2077 was so disappointing for a variety of reasons. So I am hoping Witcher 4 is a return to form. Cannot wait for another game in that universe.
This is bizarre! I could of sworn they made this statement about being in 'full production' earlier in the year.
Great news either way.
Ayyy, nice reference to the best book in the subheader there 👌

Hope: We can create our own Witcher with backstory similar to V and take part in a dynamic open world with a desperately needed improvement to combat.
Dream: That it won’t be a broken mess on release after 6 years of “full production” and be packed with Mountain Dew ads.
Just one wish: that CDProject Red don’t put a release date out until they’re certain.
I loved Cyberpunk 2077 but I’m not waiting hand a year after buying a game to be able to play past the (admittedly the size of an entire game itself) prologue
My favorite video game of all time will get a follow up! Preys Jeebus!
Forget Witcher 4 I want to know what’s going on with the Witcher 1 remake
@BearsEatBeets I think the announcement from earlier this year was that they was planning to enter full production the 2nd half of 2024… They been waiting on hiring the last couple of months in order to hit their targeted team size for production.
